WAUNAKEE (WMSN) -- Waunakee High School Senior Luke Thering is in the Scholastic Arts Spotlight this month.
Thering is the youngest of four children in a family of musicians. He got his first drum set at age four and started playing piano in first grade.
Now, he is an award-winning, and highly respected percussionist and composer. He wrote an original piece for the Waunakee Community Band and he is working on another one. "It's really cool for me to make something out of essentially nothing, just creating a piece of work from what I'm thinking in my head or how i'm feeling." Luke says.
And those who know him best say, in spite of his remarkable talent, Luke is one of the most humble people you will ever meet. "All students are enjoyed, there isn't a student here who doesn't have something special, but there aren't many here that have something as special as Luke." says Jan Tweed, who is the former Waunakee Band Director and is still very active in the music community.
Waunakee Band Director Sam Robinson nominated Luke for the Scholastic Arts Spotlight. He says, "He's very humble, he's very soft spoken, he doesn't stick out in a crowd, but he has so many gifts of music."
FOX 47 honors Luke Thering, in May's Scholastic Arts Spotlight.
Luke plans to attend UW-LaCrosse to study biology and music.
